THE INCIDENT

As I leave one of Quade’s bunker lessons, I see Branden sneaking off into the woods. He’s going to get into trouble. I can just sense it.

Fortunately, Arden couldn’t come to the session today, so I’m free to chase after the vamp and see what he’s up to. Arden wouldn’t let me risk myself by snooping. But I’m almost positive that Branden won’t hurt me if he catches me. However, he might be pissed off that I’m spying on him.

I trail after him, deep into the woods surrounding the school, until he comes to the outer wall. I get close enough to hear him chant something and wave his hand over a normal-looking part of the stonework. Then it suddenly reveals a gate.

Holy hot pockets!

He steps through and seals up the wall, hiding the passageway once again. I rush forward and try to remember the chant, but I must have messed something up in the wording because it doesn’t open for me. I imagine instead the wall shifting to its other true form, a passageway. I feel a rattle in my bones and buzzing in my head, but I push on, despite my concern about magical overload.

Suddenly, the gate appears and swings open.

My mouth falls open, too. How did I do that?

I rush through, my blood pumping. My nerves are frazzled from the amount of magic I just used and what will happen if I get caught.

But something compels me to follow Branden. The only reason I can think of for him to risk expulsion is a solid lead into who is taking the supes. He wants to find his sister.

My excuse is that I want justice for Myra and all the other victims. Hopefully, I can prevent the incubus-mage from attacking me again or going after my guys, since I stopped his evil operation.

I don’t know how I do it, but Branden doesn’t seem to hear or sense me following him. Although he does pause as if he were worried that someone will see him. Somehow, he’s in different clothes—street clothes. I idly wonder where he got them and how often he sneaks off campus.

I note that my footsteps seem lighter and quieter, as if I were mimicking Branden’s vampiric gift. Is it some kind of magic at work?

Branden enters a building with a sign indicating that it’s the Enforcers’ headquarters—the supernatural world’s police equivalent. Fortunately, it is located near the forest’s edge.

Hiding behind the bushes, I don’t have to wait long before he saunters out of the front doors and down the streets of the fae city. I glance down at my uniform, wishing that I had a change of clothes.

Quade told me before that I could almost make myself invisible—some kind of innate magic. He thought it was likely cultivated by avoiding my drunk, abusive mother. I remember trying to hide from her wrath, and I feel a familiar energy wash over me. I step out of the foliage and hurry to catch up with Branden.

I wonder where he’s going now, since he isn’t heading toward the academy.
